Carriers may reweigh or remeasure freight and rebill the shipment when the tendered data does not match their audit. The final charge depends on the applicable classification and carrier tariff.
How does the optimization suggestion work?
The calculator finds the next favorable density boundary and estimates the height reduction or added weight needed to reach it. It is a geometry what-if, not a promise that the official class will change.
Is freight class the same as an NMFC item number?
No. An NMFC item identifies the commodity and applicable classification provisions. Freight class is the numeric rating used for rating freight under those provisions.
How do I confirm the official NMFC code for my shipment?
Density gives you a planning estimate for density-rated freight, but the governing NMFC code depends on commodity type, packaging, and handling characteristics. To confirm the exact code: (1) check the NMFTA's official ClassIT database (subscription required), or (2) contact your LTL carrier or freight broker with your detailed commodity description, packaging type, and piece dimensions before tendering.
