What are freight linear feet?

Linear Feet represents the continuous floor length (in feet) of a semi-trailer that a shipment occupies from the front wall toward the rear doors.

Standard dry vans in the US are typically 53 feet long (636 inches) or 48 feet long (576 inches), with an interior usable width ranging between 98 to 102 inches.

Occupied Length (in) = Sum of (Maximum Unit Length in Each Loading Row)

Linear Feet (ft) = Total Occupied Length (in) ÷ 12

Carriers use linear feet thresholds (often 10, 12, or 14 feet) to trigger Linear Foot Minimum (LFM) or Capacity Load rules, which override standard density-based pricing.

Side-by-side pallet geometry & pinwheeling

Simplistic calculators multiply the number of pallets by a fixed 4 feet. In real trailer loading, that produces inaccurate overestimates:

  • Turned / Cross-Docked (Pinwheeling): Two standard 48"×40" pallets turned sideways measure 48" + 48" = 96" wide. Since 96" is less than the trailer's 102" interior width, two pallets fit side-by-side, occupying only 40 inches of trailer length (3.33 linear feet) instead of 8 feet.
  • Straight Loading: Two pallets loaded straight measure 40" + 40" = 80" wide, occupying 48 inches of length (4.0 linear feet).

Carrier Tariff Note

How many standard pallets fit in a 53-foot trailer?

A standard 53-foot dry van can accommodate 26 non-stacked pallets (turned side-by-side) on the floor. If the freight is stackable, up to 52 pallets can be loaded.

What is the Cubic Capacity / Extreme Length rule?

Most LTL carrier rules tariffs state that if a shipment occupies 750 cubic feet or more AND has a density of less than 6 pcf, or occupies 14+ linear feet, it is subject to volume spot pricing rather than discount tariffs.

Does this calculator support mixed pallet sizes?

Yes. You can add multiple handling units with different dimensions (e.g., Pallet A 48×40, Pallet B 42×42). The optimizer will sort and arrange them to minimize overall trailer length.

Is stacking included in this calculation?

This tool calculates occupied trailer floor space (Linear Feet). If your freight is stackable, your effective floor footprint is halved.
